Landowner insult
To the editor:
Regarding the Iron County Board meeting held on Sept 25, 2012, I would urge every voter to attend an Iron County Board meeting at least once so you can see how we are faced with a group of individuals who do not listen collectively to the voice of the people.
What happened to the board member that you elected from your district? Were they not elected to make up their own minds on issues and work in the best interest of their constituents?

October rush
Tuesday, October 02, 2012 5:22 PM | Updated ( Tuesday, October 09, 2012 12:37 PM )

While trying to follow the fuzzy football players on my high-def TV screen Sunday afternoon (only in the U.P.!), thoughts turned to the turning of the seasons.
We just stepped from September to October Monday morning, and the weather appears ready to step with us. Early this week, we are thinking about fall color and light jackets and walking through the leaves.

A fine job
To the editor:
We wanted to express our sincere gratitude for the fine job our local West Iron County School personnel displayed at the outset of this school year.

Gearing up for winter
Tuesday, September 25, 2012 3:04 PM | Updated ( Tuesday, October 02, 2012 5:22 PM )

There were no big banner signs, no “stop the presses” moments to be found, but last week’s cold and rain let all of us know summer is “officially” over.

Actually, autumn blew in on Sept. 22 and didn’t relent in letting us know that it was time to stow away the summer gear and get ready for another U.P. winter.

Oh, yes, we all know there will be some of those “Indian summer” days ahead, but the writing is clearly on the walls, or at least the frost is clearly making “dew” with our lawns.

To the editor:

The Caspian-Gaastra Fire Department would like to thank everyone that donated and helped make our raffle a success. We have our raffle once a year and all monies collected go into our equipment fund to purchase equipment that is needed.

Lake milfoil funds
To the editor:
I was amazed by Chicaugon Lake Association Vice President Joe Shubat's comment that out-of-town visitors don't mind a launch ramp fee for milfoil in a recent story.

Come to the meetings
Tuesday, September 18, 2012 1:21 PM | Updated ( Tuesday, September 25, 2012 3:03 PM )

In this week’s Reader’s Viewpoint, a letter was received regarding public participation at our communities’ board and council meetings.
We report on a lot of meetings each month, and, often, it’s the public comment period that makes for the best “story.” It’s a chance for residents to comment, complain and, yes, once in a while even pay a compliment to local government.

New this winter
Tuesday, September 11, 2012 1:13 PM | Updated ( Tuesday, September 18, 2012 1:24 PM )

Summer in Iron County is filled by events, big and small, taking place every weekend. We know that, since we at the Reporter are scurrying around here and there, trying to get pictures of everything. Some events are well-known, some are more modest, but the warm weather season always has something to do.
But once summer ends and school starts, the outdoor events fall away like the autumn leaves. Life quickly gets much quieter, and it stays quiet until next summer.

What’s he done?
To the editor:
Great, so Dan Benishek gave a speech at the Republican National Convention, that's nice.  But, can we please see some coverage in the Reporter about what Benishek has done since he's been in office?

On behalf of VFW Post 3134, we would like to give special thanks to Wayne Wales and Bill Olson.

‘Got a comment?’
Tuesday, September 04, 2012 1:32 PM

That’s what we’re asking our readers.
We’re  inviting our readers to make their views known about items they read in The Reporter’s top news stories.
We’re still going to use our letters to the editor format, what you’re familiar with as Readers’ Viewpoint. This new addition simply takes the viewpoint to a different level.
Under our new comment format, readers are, again, invited to send in their comments, which will be limited to “50 words or less.”
This brevity of words, like a Twitter comment, gives us the opportunity to publish as many as we can regarding the previous week’s news stories.
Your name will be kept confidential, so you can use a personal “tag” name, much as you see on Internet blog sites. Emailed your comments to: news@ironcountyreporter.com.
Your elected officials need to know when they are “spot on” a topic, just as much as they need to know when they’ve totally missed the mark.
Got a comment? Let us know.
