Wildlife Unlimited of Iron County donates $3,000 to the summer youth trap shooting program at Camp Gibbs Recreation Area. The program, for youth and new shooters, is offered every Wednesday in July and August beginning at 6 p.m. It is free of charge with equipment and ammunition provided for those practicing their shooting skills. On an average, 12-20 shooters attend the Wednesday night practices. In June, the group hosts students from Purdue University during the Wednesday trap shoots. Over 60 students participated. Representing the event sponsors, Wildlife Unlimited and the Hiawatha Gun Club, are from left, Rick Commenator, Art Flancher, Larry Pifke and Bob Gallup.

Geology club to hold program

FLORENCE—The Northwoods Geology Club will meet on Wednesday, March 26 at the Visitor Center. Doors will open at 5:30 p.m. for a meeting of the field trip and program planning committee.

 
Wildlife Unlimited donates venison to area PDF Print E-mail

Wildlife Unlimited of Iron County donated almost 700 pounds of venison to be split between the St. Vincent de Paul societies of Iron River and Crystal Falls. Holding one-pound packages of donated venison are, from left, Larry Pifke, Bob Gallup, Diane Grondin, Bruce Callovi, Jo Callovi, Rick Commenator, Cully Sholander and Pat Sommers.  The venison is processed by Sommers Sausage Shop in Crystal Falls. Venison is donated by local hunters. Processing is paid for by Wildlife Unlimited through fundraising efforts such as the upcoming WU banquet to be held on April 5 at the Iron County Armory. Over 40 adult hockey players gathered at the Iron County Multipurpose Building – Ice Arena in Caspian on March 8 to skate in memory of Paul Masnjak, who died last September at the age of 45. He competed with the men’s adult hockey team and played a major role in the local soccer association for years, serving as head referee at the youth matches. Funds raised at the event will be donated to the Iron Amateur Hockey Association and the Iron River Soccer Association. The afternoon game brought together both men and women hockey players from the area as well as skaters from Eagle River, Wis., and Iron Mountain. Taking to the ice were Al Reitmeyer, Wes Amerson, Christy Makuck, Ray Meyer, Nancy Westphal, Lori Polich, Mark Herzog, Ian Herzog (goalie), Donn Atanasoff, Sarah Suchovsky, Mark Mylchreest, Lisa Powell, Randy Laap, Sharon Malburg, Heidi Reddinger, Kelly Waters, Andrew Berg, Mark Pratt, Jonny Waara, Keith Baldwin, Mark Shanks, Kelly Gustafson, Jane Gustafson, Fred Shoquist, Bob Meyers, Rick Gill, Ross Freund, Bryan Pearce, Jerry Hassenberg, Ted Danielak, Roger Hiddie, Eric Zykowski, Jim Moore, Kim Vandaarhoven, Mike Demske, John Spelgatti and Zach Baumgartner (goalie).

Two of three suspects plead guilty in illegal killing of cougar

SCHOOLCRAFT COUNTY— Three suspects from Bay and Saginaw counties involved in the Dec. 9 illegal killing of a cougar appeared on March 5 in Schoolcraft County District Court.
Troy Robert Richard, 42, of Bay City, pled guilty to the taking/possession of an endangered species and conspiracy to take an endangered species.
