LANSING—The DNR reminds everyone the annual Summer Free Fishing Weekend is scheduled for Saturday and Sunday, June 9-10. On that weekend, everyone – residents and non-residents alike – can fish without a license, though all other fishing regulations still apply.

IRON RIVER—During Michigan’s Free Fishing Weekend, the Ottawa National Forest is hosting an exciting, fun-filled day of fishing for kids and their families. Community youngsters are invited to come out to Lake Ottawa with their fishing rods, tackle boxes, and bait to take part in the Ottawa National Forest’s Kids Free Fishing Derby from 8 a.m. to noon on Saturday, June 9.

CASPIAN—The monthly meeting of the Lee Le Blanc Chapter of the Audubon Society will be held at 7 p.m. Monday, June 11, at the Iron County Museum. Guest speaker will be Dr. Paul Hayes of Norway who will speaking on professional bird watching and travel medicine – how to get ready.

It was a day of adventure, challenge and learning for the seventh grade class of Forest Park. There were 41 students who experienced a day at Covenant Point. Morning rotation groups were compass, GPS and nature print making. The afternoon time was spent doing small group initiatives, low element simulations and high ropes challenges. Iron County 4-H Sharp Shooters Club co-hosted the 2012 state 4-H Shoulder-to-Shoulder pellet rifle tournament at the United Sportsmen’s Club in Merriman along with Dickinson County 4-H shooters. MERRIMAN—On May 19, the Iron County 4-H Shooters Club along with Dickinson County 4-H shooters hosted the 2012 state 4-H Shoulder-to-Shoulder Pellet Rifle tournament at the United Sportsmen’s Club in Merriman. The tournament was a result of the 2012 postal match targets shot by participating County 4-H shooting sports clubs throughout Michigan.

IRONWOOD— As the yearly March 15 to May 15 seasonal road closure comes to an end, the Ottawa National Forest reminds Off Highway Vehicle (OHV) users that all OHVs are required to stay on only those roads and trails designated open for motorized use. Use of OHVs off of designated roads and trails is prohibited.

MARQUETTE—“Ask the DNR” returns to WNMU-TV Channel 13 in the Upper Peninsula Thursday, May 31, at 8 p.m. Eastern Time. The show will focus on boating, fishing, recreation and state trails.

On Friday, May 18, 35 students from Forest Park and Florence, Wis., schools took part in the Brule River Float, a four-mile kayak float down the Brule River. After the float, the Wisconsin DNR did a presentation on fish and netting. The float trip was made possible from a grant by WE Energies. Five Wisconsin game wardens and three Michigan conservation officers volunteered their time to spend the morning on the water with the kids and cooking the food. (DNR photo)
