Wildlife Unlimited of Iron County youth hunters and mentors gather at the Crystella Ski Hill following the opening morning of the Michigan Youth Hunt on Saturday, Sept. 21. According to Youth Hunt chairman, Scott Westphal, there were 27 young hunters who participated in this year’s program. Thirteen of those were first time hunters. At the end of the two day hunt, Sept. 21-22, 14 deer had been harvested, of which four were does and 10 were bucks. The two pictured, with their whitetails, are Ciara Donati of Iron River with a spikehorn, and Ryan Peterson of Iron River, with an 8-pointer. Donati’s WU mentor was Darin Long. Peterson’s WU mentor was Kevin Nocerini. Each youth is paired with a local hunter involved in the WU Youth Hunt program. Youths are taken to the Alpha Rifle and Pistol Club shooting range for practice prior to the hunt. Each of the young hunters is placed, with their mentor, on a WU wildlife food plot or associated properties in the county. See this week’s Outdoors page for more youth hunt photos.
