Severe weather class comes to Iron River

The Forest Park Environmental Science class went to the Listening Inn on March 26 to collect data on mammals. The students crosscountry skied through the trails, stopping to collect data on mammal tracks. Students observed coyote, fisher, shrew, deer, snowshoe hare and one wolf track. Student scientists used the stride, straddle, track length and width along with other spoor to identify the mammals. Carol and Les Kuhfal, owners of the Listening Inn, welcomed students to their log cabin inn on Clark Road near Amasa. They encourage other student groups to come out and explore nature. ‘Ask the DNR’ to air on WNMU-TV Channel 13 on Thursday, April 17

MARQUETTE—“Ask the DNR” returns to WNMU-TV Channel 13 on Thursday, April 17, at 8 p.m. (EDT). The show will focus on the trout fishing opener and fishing regulations; spring wildlife activity; and wildfire prevention.

Wildlife Unlimited of Iron County hosted their 27th annual fundraising banquet on April 5 at the Iron County Armory in Iron River. Youth participation has grown at the Wildlife Unlimited banquets. Each youth receives a door prize, and many are winners in the raffle drawing.

Wildlife Unlimited of Iron County President Rick Commenator, right, presents Dave Painter a commemorative plaque at the annual banquet “for his dedication to wildlife conservation and for his service to the youth of Iron County.” Painter, a Michgan DNR conservation officer, is also active in many youth hunting activities.

Iron River Mayor Terry Tarsi won a Savage Axis 25-06 rifle at the WU banquet. Tony Tomasoski presented him with the gun and then began his duties of “handling the firearms” along with his family, Georgi and Jacob.

The first-place winner of the VFW Post 3134 Men’s Auxiliary raffle was Bob Black, third from left. Black was presented with a Ruger 270 rifle by auxiliary officers Jim Risberg, Roger Carlson and Jim Wester. Second-place winner of $50 was Andy Carlson. Gary LaFountain was the third-place winner and received $25. Monies raised will go toward a West Iron County scholarship. (submitted photo)

 
Tree & plant sale deadline extended

CRYSTAL FALLS—With the late arrival of spring this year, the Iron County Conservation District is extending its 2014 tree and plant sale order deadline until Friday, April 11.
