CRYSTAL FALLS—A pay request from Coleman Engineering was made to the Crystal Falls City Council, signaling the completion of its 2010 American Recovery and Reinvestment Act water system improvement project. A summary of payments, in the amount of $98,496.02, was presented at the council’s July 9 meeting. The water distribution part of the project is completed, said Scott McNelis of Coleman.

Controversial ordinance clarified at Stambaugh Township meeting |

STAMBAUGH TOWNSHIP—Discussion on the Chicaugon Lake usage fee continued at the Stambaugh Township meeting on July 9. In order to assist with treating the severe milfoil in the lake, the township recently passed Ordinance No. 29, which requires the purchase of a permit sticker before putting a watercraft into the lake. Not purchasing the permit and putting a watercraft into the lake in Stambaugh Township is a violation of the ordinance and subject to fines, as is any other ordinance violation.

Wellhead protection program nears finish |

STAMBAUGH TOWNSHIP—After two and a half years, the Stambaugh Township Wellhead Protection committee’s water preservation plan is nearly complete. The program was presented to the public preceding the regular monthly meeting held Monday, July 9. On hand to educate the public on the wellhead protection plan were Stambaugh Township Trustee and wellhead team member Kevin Isaacson, GEI Consultant’s engineers Craig Richardson and Rob Anderson, and Michigan Department of Environmental Qualities Resource Management Division’s Chuck Thomas.

It didn’t take much to encourage this group of youngsters to take advantage of the sprinkler system set up by the West Iron County Fire Department at the fire hall prior to get ready for the Fourth of July races. What a treat! Popsicles, prizes for race winners and a sprinkling system to cool down on a hot day.

County Board OKs Clisch’s contract |

AMASA—The Iron County Board of Commissioners approved the contract presented to the new administrator at its June 26 bi-monthly meeting. The board, meeting at the Hematite Township Hall, questioned several items in the contract before agreeing to hire Sue Clisch as administrator.

Construction crews are hard at work Monday morning, July 2, working on the U.S. 2 construction project in Iron River. This view, taken from the corner of Eighth Avenue and Adams (U.S. 2), looking east, takes in the scope of the work, including sewer and water main replacement. Additional infrastructure upgrades accompanying the road work were made by AT&T and DTE. A new street lighting system is also being paid for by a grant from MDOT, and installed by UPPCO. CRYSTAL FALLS—The popular Bass Festival, sponsored by the Crystal Falls Lions Club, will be held July 5-8. Events get under way on Thursday, July 5, with bingo at the Nylund Building on Superior Avenue. That’s also the scene on Friday for Nylund’s annual boxing invitational at 7:30 p.m. Doors open at 5:30, said organizers.

GREEN BAY, Wis.—Shopko has announced that the liquidation sale has ended and the store conversion process to Shopko Hometown will begin this week at the Iron River Pamida store. The store will remain open during the entire conversion process, which will last between five and six weeks.
