IRON RIVER—The city of Iron River, the Iron River Downtown Development Authority and Tim Hovey of Hovey Construction will hold a groundbreaking and ribbon-cutting ceremony this week to celebrate the rehabilitation and renovation of the historic Central School into the Apple Blossom Apartments.

IRON RIVER—In the aftermath of the recent discovery of items used to make methamphetamine at an Iron River city park, the Michigan State Police and the Upper Peninsula Special Enforcement Team will hold a seminar on “Methamphetamine and Your Community.”

IRON RIVER—NorthStar Health System employees gathered at the “Expedition Centriq” informational meeting throughout the day on May 13 to celebrate and learn about the transition to electronic medical records (EMR).

IRON RIVER—More charges and arrests are pending after six area residents were arrested last week on drug charges, following an UPSET investigation of heroin sales at an Iron River house.

IRON RIVER—It has been a long time coming, and it won’t actually happen for a few more years.

CASPIAN—The city of Caspian, at its May meeting, discussed the need for two new part-time officers for the Caspian-Gaastra Police Authority, but declined to offer information on the status of its former officer, Jeremy Allen, other than to state that Allen was no longer employed with the authority. 

Students at West Iron (here) and Forest Park saw the horrors that can happen to young drivers during mock traffic accidents staged at both schools last week. Participating in the event were area law enforcement agencies, the State Police, fire departments, EMTs, Search and Rescue and even county funeral homes. The cars at both events were donated by Axle Auto Parts of Caspian.

IRON COUNTY—Those who gave their all for their country will be remembered and honored next Monday, May 27, when Iron County and the rest of the nation observes Memorial Day.

IRON RIVER—During a City Council hearing May 15 on the proposed 2013-14 Iron River budget, most attention was centered on proposed cuts to the police department, with a total of three officers in mind.

IRON RIVER—At its regular May 15 meeting, the Iron River City Council voted to allow the Michigan Department of Resources to use the Homer Road right of way as a detour for the recreation trail during the replacement of three bridges along the trail.
