CRYSTAL FALLS—On Sunday, July 8, at 4:20 p.m., Iron County Sheriff’s deputies were dispatched to a report of an armed assailant in Iron River Township.

 
County Board OKs Clisch’s contract

AMASA—The Iron County Board of Commissioners approved the contract presented to the new administrator at its June 26 bi-monthly meeting.
 The board, meeting at the Hematite Township Hall, questioned several items in the contract before agreeing to hire Sue Clisch as administrator.

 
Vandalism investigated

CRYSTAL FALLS—The Iron County Sheriff’s Office is investigating a malicious destruction of property complaint that occurred at the Alpha Rifle and Pistol Range, located at 146 Mastodon Road.

Construction crews are hard at work Monday morning, July 2, working on the U.S. 2 construction project in Iron River. This view, taken from the corner of Eighth Avenue and Adams (U.S. 2), looking east, takes in the scope of the work, including sewer and water main replacement. Additional infrastructure upgrades accompanying the road work were made by AT&T and DTE. A new street lighting system is also being paid for by a grant from MDOT, and installed by UPPCO. IRON RIVER—Amid the hammering, pounding, mud and dust, Iron River residents are taking the construction in stride, if not always in the right direction on the one-way street detours.

 
Bass Festival set for July 5-8

CRYSTAL FALLS—The popular Bass Festival, sponsored by the Crystal Falls Lions Club, will be held July 5-8.
 Events get under way on Thursday, July 5, with bingo at the Nylund Building on Superior Avenue.
 That’s also the scene on Friday for Nylund’s annual boxing invitational at 7:30 p.m. Doors open at 5:30, said organizers.

 
Pamida store conversion begins

GREEN BAY, Wis.—Shopko has announced that the liquidation sale has ended and the store conversion process to Shopko Hometown will begin this week at the Iron River Pamida store.
 The store will remain open during the entire conversion process, which will last between five and six weeks.

 
Staff changes approved at FP

CRYSTAL FALLS—The Forest Park Board of Education made several decisions concerning staff at its June 25 meeting.
 Prior to the meeting, Deb Divoky was sworn in as a new board member, filling the vacancy left from John Harrison’s resignation last month. Appointed now, she may run for the board position in the November general election.

 
Circus comes to Iron River July 5

County gets ready for Fourth of July festivities

IRON COUNTY—The Fourth of July will be celebrated next Wednesday, July 4, in Iron County with special events planned in Iron River, Alpha and Amasa.

‘Apple Blossom Apartments’ development plans under way

IRON RIVER—Don’t call it “The Old Central School” anymore—the Apple Blossom Apartments development plans are under way.
 Having received approval from the Michigan State Housing Development Authority, the project’s developer, the Hovey Companies, is moving forward with remediation plans, then  renovating the building into one, two and three-bedroom affordable housing, along with retail space on the lower level.
