On Oct. 10, the Caspian-Gaastra Fire Department provided both fun activities and important information for the pre-kindergarteners at Stambaugh Elementary School. Joe Holm shows his daughter, Vivian Holm, how to use the fire hose to put out the “fire” in the dollhouse. Before the demonstration, the fire department made the dollhouse smoke, so each student had a chance to put the fire out. Other local fire departments provided activities and learning opportunities throughout Iron County as part of Fire Prevention Week.

IRON RIVER—At its Oct. 8 special meeting, the Iron River City Council voted to pulverize roughly 1,000 feet of Coolidge Avenue, making the road more of a recycled asphalt material.

Man charged with copper tubing theft

CRYSTAL FALLS—A 53-year-old Green Bay man has been arrested by authorities in connection with the theft of copper tubing from a hunting camp in northern Hematite Township. He is also being investigated in connection with thefts at other camps in the area.

Troopers respond to Breitung collision

Westphal retires from Reporter as editor

IRON RIVER—The staff and management of the Iron County Reporter has announced the retirement of Allyce Westphal as editor.
During her time at the Reporter, she won several Good News Awards and many certificates of merit for feature articles, her regular column, “County Café,” and photographs.
