Lindwall publishes children’s story

IR council discusses winter woes

IRON RIVER—Snowplows and frozen water lines were hot topics at the Iron River City Council’s Feb. 19 regular meeting.
City Manager Perry Franzoi said that the city has been charged close to $30,000 so far for thawing water lines. The city has been using three contractors: Jerry’s Welding, Three Lakes Steel and FA Industrial Services.

IRON RIVER—After about six hours of sleep, Kris DuFresne woke in the wee hours of Feb. 4 thirsty. Simple problem, simple solution.
Or not. DuFresne wandered into the bathroom of her rented house on Sturgeon Street in Iron River, grabbed her drinking cup and turned on the faucet. All she got was a drip of water. And then some gurgling noises from inside the pipe.

CRYSTAL FALLS—At the Feb. 11 Iron County Board meeting, commissioners voted to pay the Michigan State University Extension Office (MSUE) the $30,000 that was requested for a part-time 4-H coordinator.

IRON RIVER—Olympian Nick Baumgartner left Iron County on Feb. 4 to prepare for his second Winter Olympics.
His first stop was in Munich. From there, his destination was Sochi, Russia, where he will compete in the 2014 Winter Olympics.
In an interview before leaving Iron River, Nick said his preparations for the Olympics have not been much different than his normal activity.

Consider how much daylight are getting. This Wednesday, we will have 10 hours, 15 minutes between sunrise and sunset. That’s nearly 100 minutes more than on Dec. 21, when winter started. The sun rises higher in the sky, too, which means it packs more power each day.
