CRYSTAL FALLS—Crystal Falls native Bert Chapman will be signing his book “Recipes From the Wayside Lunch” on July 11 and 12 at the Ben Franklin store in Crystal Falls. The signings will run from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. each day.
A second-generation Finnish-American author, Chapman grew up in Crystal Falls. He includes Finnish-American recipes used and created by his mother, Mary Rosenlof-Chapman. She grew up on the Rosenlof farm located in the Monongahela location.
In the early 1950s, Mary Rosenlof-Chapman owned and operated “The Wayside Lunch” diner located on U.S. 2 between Crystal Falls and Iron River.
Family recipes and stories span life in Finland before the Rosenlof family immigrated to America, the immigrant family during the early days in Crystal Falls and family members during the Civil War, the Depression and World War II. Bert Chapman’s cookbook reflects the influence of the food, ethnic groups, and humor unique to the Upper Peninsula.
