BEECHWOOD—On June 11, a group of 53 people took part in the seventh annual walking cemetery tour in West Iron County, held at Rosehill Cemetery in Beechwood.
The event was sponsored by the Iron County Genealogical Society and the Iron County Museum. Participants came from Kingsford, Wisconsin, Indiana and Hawaii, as well as from the local area.
Dale Safford, West Iron County’s “Cemetery Lady,” shared facts about the cemetery and stories of many people who are buried there.
Also contributing were local residents who shared family heritage and genealogical information:
-Charlotte Bofinger, Beechwood Historical Society president, who spoke about building preservation
-Bob Weeks, assistant
-Pat Turner, who spoke about her parents, Ivan and Saimi Melstrom
-Dennis Melstrom, who told stories about several people buried in the cemetery
-Marcia Bernhardt, who spoke about her husband’s parents, Christian and Christine Bernhardt
-Kim Stafford, who spoke about Lauri “John” Lakso
-Dale Safford, coordinator, who spoke about more than a dozen people buried in the cemetery
-Jerry Johnson, who spoke about his great-grandparents, Andrew and Sara Johnson
-Audrey Ridolphi, who spoke about her husband Aldo Ridolphi and her Olson ancestors
-Ruth Lopez, who talked about her parents, Louis and Mildred Henriksen
-Betty Petroski, who spoke about her adopted uncle Jack Saari, a Paul Bunyan-type of person.
