FP boys, girls earn golf titles
CHICAUGON LAKE—Forest Park’s golf team wound up on the top of the leader board May 19, earning team honors in the Skyline-Central U.P. Conference Championships, held at the George Young Golf Course.
The Trojans end their season at the Division 3 U.P. Finals on May 29 in the Escanaba area.
Forest Park’s girls won by nine strokes over second place Bark River-Harris, finishing with a score of 434 to the Broncos’ 443. Munising was a distant third with 510.
Senior Lexi Gussert led the Lady Trojans with a score of 48-50—98, which placed her third in the individual standings. Hannah Marinoff (54-57) and Toni Santi (56-55) both shot 111, Kaitlyn Bradley finished with 114 (56-58), and Annie Taylor (58-63) shot 121.
Bark River’s Savanna Stenberg was girls medalist with a round of 48-46--94, and teammate Hannah Starnes was second at 47-49--96. But though Bark River finished 1-2 in individual scores, Forest Park won the team title because Trojan girls finished 3-4-5. All five of the FP golfers finished in the top 10.
In the boys competition, Forest Park finished with a score of 349, eight strokes in front of second place Carney-Nadeau (357). Munising (368) was third.
Brett Smithson led the Trojans with a round of 42-42—84, which was third place overall. Behind him were Kevin Stankewicz (42-44—86), Dennis Mitchell (46-42—88), Steve West (45-46—91) and Mitch Bal (53-52—105).
Carney’s Hunter Eichhorn was medalist with 41-37—78, and Munising’s Colin Immel took second with 42-39—81. Again, Forest Park’s team depth and consistency were key in winning the team title—Trojan golfers were third, fifth, seventh and ninth individually.
After the meet, conference coaches announced the Skyline-CUP all-conference team. Forest Park’s girls chosen were Gussert, Marinoff, Santi, Bradley and Taylor.
Named from the Trojan boys team were Smithson, Stankewicz, Mitchell and West.
