MASTODON TOWNSHIP—On Wednesday March 12, Iron County 911 received a report of a vehicle theft from a residence on Camp 5 Road in Mastodon Township. The victim had the vehicle warming in his driveway when it was stolen.
Deputies from the Sheriff’s Office responded to investigate, and while traveling to the area, located the stolen vehicle traveling north on Camp 5 Road. After a short pursuit and standoff after stopping, the suspect surrendered without altercation.
The suspect, 43-year-old Howard Charles Adkins, from Cedar Lake Ind., was transported to the Iron County Correctional Facility and lodged. Adkins was been charged with unlawful driving away of an automobile. Bond was set at arraignment at $2,500 cash.
On March 13, the Sheriff’s Office and the Chippewa Snow Cats snowmobile club recovered a Jeep that was registered to Adkins stuck on a snowmobile trail about one mile south of Johanson Road in Crystal Falls Township.
Deputies were assisted by the Chippewa Snowcats Snowmobile club and the Michigan State Police.
The incident remains under investigation by the Iron County Sheriff’s Office.
