CASPIAN—A benefit old-timers hockey game will be played Saturday, March 8, at the Caspian ice arena from 3 to 5 p.m. The game is free for the public to attend.
John Spelgatti, one of the players, said the game is being played for a memorial fund in honor of Paul Masnjak.
“We’ve got old-timers from Iron Mountain and Eagle River, and some of the women are playing also. So it’s a hodge-podge of players, just to go out and have a good time and earn money.”
All funds raised will be split between the Iron Amateur Hockey Association and the Iron River Soccer Association, in Masnjak’s name.
Masnjak died last September at the age of 45. He played hockey with the men’s adult team and played a major role in the local soccer association for years, serving as head referee at the youth matches.
“He was our friend,” Spelgatti said, “and we’d like to do something to honor him.”
Each player is being charged an extra $5 to take part in the game. Anyone else who wants to make a donation to the cause should contact Spelgatti at 265-5573 or 906-367-6089.
