IRON RIVER—Renewal of the millage for the West Iron District Library was overwhelmingly approved by voters at a special election held Feb. 26.
The library millage renewal was the only item on the ballot, and it got 87% support from voters—those who braved the cold weather to vote, that is. County officials reported only 6.7% of eligible voters cast ballots.
The renewal got 340 yes votes and 51 opposed. In Iron River’s second precinct, it got 100 percent of the vote—34 yes votes from 34 ballots cast. In Gaastra, it passed 17-1.
The ballot proposal appeared on the ballot in the cities of Iron River, Caspian and Gaastra and in Bates Township, Iron River Township and Stambaugh Township.
Voters approved renewal of the 1.5-mill levy for five years, 2015 through 2019.
