IRON RIVER—The Iron County Fair Association has announced that the 2014 Iron County Fair will be held Aug. 28-31 with the entry day being Aug. 27 at noon.
That is two weeks later than the 2013 County Fair. Jon Ahlberg, vice president of the Iron County Fair Association, said that the date change is due to the switch to a new carnival.
The Iron County Fair has been using Schmidt Amusements from Standish for over 30 years, but this year, Schmidt will not be returning to the U.P.
According to Ahlberg, two other U.P. fairs that also used Schmidt Amusements have now switched to Spectrum Entertainment of Ironwood. Because of this, Schmidt will not travel to the U.P. for only the Iron County fair.
The Iron County Fair will also use Spectrum Entertainment this year. Their only dates available were Aug. 28-31.
Representatives from the fair association traveled to Wisconsin seeking a carnival in January but had no luck.
“It’s hard to get a carnival,” Ahlberg said. “We apologize to everyone in the county. We wanted to make sure we gave people enough time to alter their plains for this year.”
The new carnival will bring different rides and activities, but will be similar to what the Iron County Fair housed in the past.
“It’s kind of exciting,” Ahlberg said. “We’ve had the same rides and activities for year and years, and now it will be a little different.”
The fair schedule will be very similar to the fairs in the past. A few things may be changed, but no commitments have been made to scheduling yet, as the association’s first priority was informing everyone about the date change. 4-H activities, crafts and photography will be the same this year.
