IRON COUNTY— The DNR invites everyone to take advantage of the upcoming annual Winter Free Fishing Weekend on Saturday and Sunday, Feb. 15-16. On those two days, residents and non-residents can fish without a license, though all other fishing regulations still apply.
Michigan has celebrated the Winter Free Fishing Weekend every year since 1994 as a way to promote awareness of and better connection to the state’s vast aquatic resources and fishing opportunities. With more than 3,000 miles of Great Lakes shoreline, tens of thousands of miles of rivers and streams, and 11,000 inland lakes – Michigan and fishing are a perfect match.
“Michigan is home to many fun and family-friendly outdoor activities during the colder months – and fishing is definitely among the most popular,” said DNR Director Keith Creagh.
“Our Winter Free Fishing Weekend is a great time for people to get outdoors and explore the state’s broad range of Pure Michigan fishing opportunities. There’s something for everyone – on your own, with a friend or with the whole family.”
To encourage involvement in this year’s Winter Free Fishing Weekend, organized activities are being scheduled in communities across the state. These activities are coordinated by a variety of organizations including constituent groups, schools, local and state parks, businesses and others. A full list of these events – as well as tools to assist communities that want to plan and promote local events – can be found online at www.michigan.gov/freefishing.
An Upper Peninsula event being held is in Gogebic County. The 5th Annual Wakefield Volunteer Fire Department Ice Fishing Contest will be held at the VFW Post 9084 (107 US Highway 2, Wakefield) on Saturday, Feb. 15 from 11 a.m. to 4 p.m.
The fishing contest is a part of the fifth annual Ice Fishing Contest and Family Fun Day. Door prizes will be given throughout the day for registered people. There will be inside and outside fun! Entry fee is $5 for adults, $3 for kids ages 3-12.
