BATES TOWNSHIP—On Wednesday Jan. 8, the Iron County Sheriff’s Office investigated a two-vehicle crash that occurred on U.S. 2 at Bates Amasa Road in Bates Township.
At approximately 9 a.m., a Michigan motor carrier officer came upon the crash while conducting commercial vehicle enforcement in Iron County.
Wilbert Krahn, 78, of Iron River, made a left turn from Bates Amasa Road onto U.S. 2, driving into the path of a westbound vehicle driven by Donald Powell, 52, of Iron River. Powell was unable to avoid the Krahn vehicle and struck it as it turned onto U.S. 2. The impact caused airbag deployment in both vehicles.
Occupants of the Powell vehicle sought their own treatment for minor injuries. Krahn was taken by NorthStar EMS to the NorthStar Hospital in Iron River to receive treatment for non-life threatening injuries.
Krahn was cited for fail to yield.
Deputies were assisted by the Michigan State Motor Carrier Officer, the Iron River Police Department, Northland Service, and the Michigan State Police.
