CRYSTAL FALLS—With the post-season now less than a month away, Forest Park earned wins over two Skyline conference volleyball opponents—Mid Peninsula and North Dickinson—last week.
Coach Kim Bjork’s team now has a 21-1-5 record overall and is 9-0 against Skyline Conference opponents.
The Trojans’ week started with a 3-0 sweep of Mid Peninsula on Oct. 7. One look at the set scores—25-2, 25-9, 25-8—tells you how uncompetitive Mid Pen was.
The match highlight was Libby Shamion’s serving in the first set. She fired in 15 points in a row, including eight aces—four of them consecutively—against the bewildered Wolverines. Maria Stankewicz closed out the first set with a seven-point turn, and Hannah Marinoff ended the second set with a nine-point run. The entire match lasted just 40 minutes.
While FP made service errors, Coach Bjork said her team served well. “We took advantage of free balls,” she added. “All our hitters contributed, and Maria [Stankewicz] did a great job setting all our hitters.
Lexi Gussert, 16 kills, 3 assists; Maria Stankewicz, 2 kills, 23 assists; Hannah Marinoff, 4 aces; Michaela Steiro, 3 kills; Libby Shamion, 7 kills, 10 aces; Kelsie Hendrickson, 3 kills; Adel Isaacson, 2 kills.
Except for a stumble of two in the third set, the Lady Trojans had few problems at North Dickinson on Oct. 8. The visitors took home a 3-0 win (25-14, 25-6, 25-21).
Coach Bjork said her team controlled the match—most of the night, anyway. “We didn’t finish like we wanted,” she continued, “but we pulled out the win.”
The Lady Trojans’ serving pleased the coach, especially in the second set. But “We still haven’t put together three consistent sets.”
Lexi Gussert was FP’s top front-line weapon against the Nordics, earning 14 kills and four blocks. Shamion backed her with seven kills, and Michaela Steiro struck for five more.
Lexi Gussert, 14 kills, 5 aces, 4 blocks; Maria Stankewicz, 4 aces, 25 assists, 3 digs; Libby Shamion, 7 kills, 2 aces; Michaela Steiro, 5 kills; Adel Isaacson, 3 kills, 2 aces, 3 digs; Kelsi Hendrickson, 3 digs, 2 kills; Hannah Marinoff, 3 digs.
• The Lady Trojans traveled to North Central Oct. 14 and are back home to host Rapid River Thursday, Oct. 17. (Their next to last home match this season.) On Tuesday, Oct. 22, they visit West Iron: It’s Pinkout Night for both teams.
