IRON RIVER—Give West Iron’s volleyball team an “A” for effort. In their first set at Forest Park on Oct. 1, they gave the the Class D juggernaut all they could handle and more.
But after FP just barely survived 29-27, it was smooth sailing for the Lady Trojans, who went on to win the match 3-0 (29-27, 25-10, 25-15).
Two nights later, on Oct. 3, the Wykons never could figure out Alyssa Norback, whose serves powered L’Anse to a 3-0 win over WIC (25-14, 25-19, 25-15).
That first set against Forest Park may have been the Wykons’ best of the year. It featured 11 lead changes. Just when you thought one tem was about to pull away, it lost the serve and the other team got a rally going.
Threes by FP’s Libby Shamion and Maria Stankewicz were countered by two from WIC’s Amy Richardson and four from Megan Eagloski, which put West Iron in front 15-14. Later, Richardson served in two more for a 20-18 WIC lead, and the Wykons got it to 24-21 and served for the set.
But a kill attempt went off the net cord and just wouldn’t go over. The action continued: FP’s Stankewicz got the ball and served in three for a 25-24 Trojan lead—but set point was hit wide, and West Iron got the ball back at 25-25.
The Lady Trojans got another chance at 26-25—this time, Sierra Rasmussen’s kill gave West Iron another chance. The Wykons got it to 27-26, but FP’s Kend
