IRON RIVER— Time is running out on summer … and on West Iron’s girls tennis season. The season ends Wednesday, Oct. 2, when the Wykons take part in the Division 2 U.P. Finals at Westwood High School.
The Wykons have mainly been playing Division 1 schools—Gladstone, Escanaba, Kingsford, Menominee, Negaunee—throughout August and September. On Sept. 23, West Iron took on the U.P.’s biggest school, Marquette, at Nelson Field in its final dual match.
Marquette got the win 6-2. West Iron’s wins came at fourth singles (Jessie Prudhomme, 6-2, 6-4) and third doubles (Kristin Smith and Alexis Golfis, 6-7 (3-7), 6-2, 6-2).
The fourth doubles team, Lexi Kinner and Megan Quayle, fell in three sets with Marquette. At first doubles, Megan Miatech and Allie Schive lost in two hard-fought sets, and so did Brittanie Barry-Emmy Kinner at third doubles.
Marquette swept past the Wykons’ top three singles players, Haley Anderson, Tori Harris and Kiki Piwarski.
Coach Denise Spelgatti said it was a good warm-up for the Great Northern Conference tourney later in the week. “The scores were much closer than they seem,” she added. “Hopefully on Wednesday some of these scores will be reversed.”
JV players Michelle Wiegand and Sydney Schram won a JV match 6-1.
