IRON RIVER—Nikki Mitchell, who recently joined the Iron County Reporter staff, was born and raised in Iron River and graduated from West Iron County High School in 2006.
After spending 2.5 years at Carthage College in Kenosha, Wis., she transferred to Northern Michigan University and graduated with a bachelor of science degree in English writing with a minor in journalism.
During her time at NMU, she took interest and focused mainly on print journalism, despite the general movement toward electronic journalism. She worked as a staff writer for the student-run newspaper, The North Wind.
Once graduated, she and her husband, Michael, moved back to Iron River to be close to their families.
She is the daughter of Donelle Marcell of Iron River and the granddaughter of Norman and Sandy Marcell of Iron River.
“It’s exciting to write for the newspaper I grew up reading,” she said. “While away at school, I had my grandparents send me The Reporter so I could keep up with life in Iron County.”
