Jacob Luckey of Iron River looks for an opening during his bout July 5 at Friday Night Fights in Crystal Falls.
CRYSTAL FALLS—Friday Night Fights was held for its eighth year July 5 at the Nylund center here. The event paid tribute to Crystal Falls native LeRoy Nylund.
This amateur boxing event was a fundraiser for the HAWK (Help a Willing Kid) Foundation. All money raised will go towards enriching the lives of underprivileged children ages 8-17.
“We get a lot of support from the community, but we also like to give back to the community” said Ali Easley, HAWK’s president. The HAWK Foundation recently donated weight lifting equipment to Forest Park High School.
“Boxing helps the kids build self-confidence and self-esteem,” said Easley. Senior novice division boxer Robert Carron from Detroit said, “I’ve been doing this a while. Boxing helps me release my anger.”  Richard Allen from Lac de Flambeau, Wis., said “Boxing helps me stay in shape and keeps me healthy.”
The foundation doesn’t only teach the kids to box but also offers other means of assistance if the kids are open and willing to receive it. To find out more about the HAWK Foundation visit www.helpawillingkid.org.
