LANSING—To encourage involvement in Free Fishing Weekends, organized activities are being scheduled in communities across the state. In Iron County, there will be a kids fishing derby at Bewabic State Park.
The Kids’ Fishing Derby will be held on Saturday, June 8, from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m., in the park’s day use area.
“Come to Bewabic State Park to celebrate Free Fishing Weekend.”, said Jim Peace, park officer.
“We invite families to come out to Bewabic Park for a day of fishing fun. Don’t worry if you don’t know how, we will teach you.”
Prizes will be awarded for the largest fish and as part of the casting competition. Meet in the day use area. Youth 15 and under may participate in the derby.
While the event itself is entirely free of charge, there is the recreation passport requirement for vehicular entry into the park.
Bewabic State Park is located at 720 Idlewild Road in Crystal Falls. For more information call (906) 875-3324.
Two days twice a year, families and friends can enjoy one of Michigan’s premiere outdoor activities, Michigan fishing, for free. The Free Fishing Weekend for summer is June 8- 9.
All fishing license fees will be waived for two days. Residents and out-of-state visitors may enjoy fishing on both inland and Great Lakes’ waters for all species of fish. All fishing regulations will still apply.
For many, the annual Free Fishing Weekend has become a tradition - a time to get together and have some fishing fun. While some may find time to reflect while fishing, there are no limits to variations on a great theme.
Experienced anglers who offer a child or young adult the chance to take their first fishing trip can provide a rewarding experience for all.
