Ready for regionals: FP girls first at two meets PDF Print E-mail

CRYSTAL FALLS—Forest Park’s girls track team won both tournaments it entered last week: the Norway Invitational May 6 and the Rapid River Invitational May 9.
The boys team took fourth at Norway and third at Rapid River. This week, the focus is on the Division 3 regional tourney at North Dickinson May 16, which decides qualifiers for the U.P. Finals.
At Norway: The Lady Trojans had their best day of the young season on May 6, winning the Norway Invitational by 27.5 points.
Four individuals and two relay teams claimed first place. Event winners were Mary Grandahl in the 100 (13.70 seconds), Georgie Dohl in the 300 low hurdles (53.48), Libby Shamion in the 200 (30.13) and Gina Graff in discus (92 feet, ½ inch).
The 800 and 400 relay teams also hit the finish line first. The 800 team (1:59.21) included Maria Stankewicz, Kendra Campbell, Shamion and Grandahl. The 400 team (55.64) featured Stankewicz, Caitlin Dorton, Katie McCole and Grandahl.
Seconds went to Dohl in 100 high hurdles, Amanda Bustillos in the 1600, Campbell in the 300 lows, Dorton in the 200, Adel Isaacson in the 3200, Graff in shot put and the 3200 and 1600 relay teams. Finishing third: Shamion in the 400.
The Forest Park girls won with 147.5 points, followed by Niagara (120) and North Dickinson (81). Seven teams took part.

Chris Hilberg had the only first place finish for the Trojan boys team, who ended up in fourth place, 2½ points out of third, at Norway.
Hilberg won the high jump competition, clearing 5-8. Two Trojans and two relays all finished in second place: Brett Hietala in the 100, Billy Ragio in long jump and the 400 and 1600 relays.
Thirds were earned by Steve Hallmann in shot put and the 800 relay.
Forest Park finished fourth with 71.5 points. North Dickinson won with 161.5, followed by North Central (99) and Niagara (74).

At Rapid River: The Lady Trojans had another big day at the Rapid River Invitational May 9, taking first place in the 12-team all-Division 3 event by 28 points.
Grandahl played a big role in all three of her team’s first place finishes, winning the 100-meter dash and anchoring the first place 400 and 1600 relays. She was second in the 200.
Dohl also added plenty of points for her team, with seconds in both hurdles events. Third places came from Shamion (400), Melina Doering (long jump) and Stankewicz (100).
FP won with 95 points, far ahead of second place Mid Peninsula (67) and third place Bark River-Harris (62).

Field: Long jump: 3. Doering, 14-0. Shot put: 5. Gina Graff. Discus: 4. Graff.
The boys team had three winning relays (800, 400 and 1600) and another first place from Hilberg in high jump.
The Trojans’ fourth relay finished third, and so did Aberly in the 400 run. Ragio and Hallmann earned team points in two field events each. Hietala ran in all three winning relays.
The host Rockets finished first with 117 points, followed by North Dickinson (101) and Forest Park (63).
