IRON RIVER—Menominee dealt West Iron’s boys tennis team its first loss of the season May 6, dealing the Wykons a 5-3 loss at Nelson Field.
Coach Joe Serbentas said the Maroons have some very good athletes who ground out some victories against a West Iron team that was missing third singles starter Adam Newby, who was ill.
That meant Serbentas had to move Alex Ralston to third singles and shuffle the rest of his lineup around.
Steady at No. 1 singles, Austin Waara made short work Bret Anderson, 6-1, 6-1. “Austin continues to play well,” said his coach.
The Wykons’ other wins came in doubles. Andrew Peterson and Sean Gustafson earned a 6-2, 6-4 win, while Tylor Capadagli and Joe Pisoni battled three sets at second doubles to win 4-6, 6-4, 6-4.
Ralston battled to a first set tiebreak but lost in straight sets, as did Connor O’Donnell at fourth doubles. Aren Newby and Max Maloney fell in two at third doubles, but both sets were battles: 6-4, 7-5. Tristan Nelson and Zane Sarafiny lost at fourth doubles.
• The Wykons played in the Kingsford Invitational May 11. This week, they were scheduled to host Ishpeming in their final home match May 13. After that, they travel to Marquette County four times: to Negaunee on May 14, Marquette on May 15; the Negaunee Invitational on May 18; and Westwood on May 20.
