IRON RIVER—West Iron’s boys tennis team finally got to start its season on April 30 and got off to a strong start, defeating Iron Mountain 5-3.
It was the Wykons’ only match last week. Rain ended a match at Norway May 2 shortly after it began, and a May 3 home match against Escanaba was moved to May 10 due to icy conditions and the threat of snow.
Even though Coach Joe Serbentas’ team was only able to get one outdoor practice before the IM match, the singles team won three of the four matches. Austin Waara (first singles) lost only three games in a straight-set win over Taylor Huotari, and Alex Ralston earned a 6-1, 6-0 win at fourth singles.
Ryan Rogers, at second singles, outfought Sawyer Kujala 7-5, 6-3. Adam Newby lost in three sets at third singles. He battled hard to win the second set 7-5 over Luke Truscott but lost in the third.
In doubles, Andrew Peterson and Sean Gustafson won at first doubles 6-1, 6-4, and Aren Newby and Max Maloney (third doubles) won a second set tiebreaker after a 6-0 first set.
Serbentas noted that two of the Mountaineers’ three wins came in three-set matches. Second doubles duo Tylor Capadagli and Joe Pisoni scrapped hard through three very close sets before falling 4-6, 6-4, 7-5.
“There was a lot of inconsistency,” said Serbentas, “as was to be expected.
“I feel pretty good about my lineup after the first match and expect improvement after more practice time outside.”
• Three home matches this week: Menominee on May 6, Kingsford on May 8, and Escanaba on May 10. The Kingsford Invitational is Saturday, May 11.
The Wykons’ final home meet of the season is May 13 against Ishpeming.
