IRON RIVER—West Iron County has filled its first week of the 2013 football season.
The Wykons will take on the Munising Mustangs—both the varsity and junior varsity teams—to start the new season (which will start on Aug. 29-31, a week later than it did in 2012).
Mike Berutti, Wykons varsity coach and athletic director, said Munising sent a contract last week. “It looks like we are going to have a JV-varsity doubleheader in Munising in week 1.” Berutti had been searching around for an opponent to start the season.
Last year, the Wykons defeated Pittsford (from near the Ohio border) at St. Ignace to open its season. In 2011, Three Lakes, Wis., forfeited to the Wykons in Week 1.
“It’s going to be on the road again,” Berutti said, “but at least we’ll have one.” Based on last year’s schedule, the Wykons will have four home games this fall, against L’Anse, Calumet, Northland Pines and Hancock.
