IRON RIVER—    Iron River District Ranger Norman Nass announces a temporary, partial closure of the Ge-Che Trail near Lake Ottawa on the Iron River Ranger District.
“For public safety, the eastern half of the Ge-Che Hiking/Cross Country Ski Trail system will be closed for the 2012-2013 winter season,” states District Ranger Nass. The trail will be temporarily closed due to logging operations that are occurring in the area. “The closure includes what is known as the Ge-Che and Bennan Lake loops, and all trails in and around the Lake Ottawa Recreation area.”
Due to increased traffic in the area, any visitors are being asked to park near the Covenant Point Bible Camp (off the Lake Ottawa road west of Hagerman Lake). This will reduce the potential for accidents near the Lake Ottawa parking lot while there are logging vehicles in the area.
“As always, we encourage people to be extremely cautious when travelling Forest roads during the winter months,” Nass reiterates. “Many of our timber harvest activities occur in the winter and there is potential for increased logging traffic on our roads. Additionally, we ask that you are cautious at all intersections, watch for snowmobilers crossing the road, and be aware of road conditions.”
Any questions related to the temporary closure of Ge-Che trail can be directed to the Watersmeet/Iron River Districts Office at 906-358-4551.
