IRON RIVER—Organizers for The IronLine dog sled race are moving ahead with hopes of snow in the forecast.
The new winter event for Iron County will take place on Jan. 18-19, with the opening race ceremonies beginning at 6 p.m. on Friday in the downtown Iron River area. Mushers will take off from the Iron County Chamber of Commerce RV Park. The race route follows the Apple Blossom Trail and the snowmobile trail from Iron River heading toward Chicaugon Lake.
The route for the 40-mile race with 10-dog teams will continue around Chicaugon Lake and through the grounds of George Young Recreational Complex.
The start-finish line will be in downtown Iron River for both Friday night and Saturday. The Mushers Village will be open both days at the RV Park. On Saturday, the second stage of the race will begin at 9:30 a.m.
Currently, there are 15 teams signed up for the race. Race organizers say possibly five more teams will be attending.
At this point they are moving ahead and hoping for more snow on the trails. For updates, a detailed trail map and a schedule of events, visit
