IRON RIVER—The Iron River City council selected Bernie Sacheck as its 4th Ward council member after a contender stepped down.
Sacheck, William “Rick” Commenator, Keith Hamel and Thomas Angeli had all submitted letters of interest for the position that was vacated when Ray Coates won election to the Iron County Board of Commissioners.
During last week’s meeting, Mayor Terri Tarsi made a motion to bring Sacheck on board. That motion was seconded by Council Member Al Perlongo. During the vote, Councilmen Bill LaRock and Ed Marcell voted against Sacheck.
Marcell moved that the council seat Commenator, with a second by LaRock. Tarsi and Perlongo voted against Commenator’s inclusion.
With a draw between the two candidates, the city would have been forced into an election. But Commenator withdrew his application for the 4th ward seat, wanting to “save the taxpayers the expense of an election.”
The council then voted unanimously to seat Sacheck.
Sacheck served as Iron River mayor from 1996 to 2000. He is on the Downtown Development Authority and the Board of Review.
“My main focus is going to be to try to bring more jobs into the area,” he said in an interview after the vote. “This area is not going to survive until we start bringing people into this area and stop this exodus.”
