CRYSTAL FALLS—The Dickinson Area Community Foundation has $13,200 available for grants in Crystal Falls.
“We’re very excited to offer this much grant money to the Crystal Falls area,” Tamara Juul of the DACF said. “The focus this year is on programs benefiting the youth of Crystal Falls and community projects.”
The Crystal Falls Area Community Foundation has $12,800 available to the Crystal Falls Youth Fund, $400 for the Crystal Falls Community Project Fund and an additional $2,560 is available to non-profit organizations who have established agency funds with the foundation.
With $5.8 million in 92 different funds, the DACF provides grants in Dickinson County and the surrounding area for contributing organizations. The Crystal Falls Community Foundation oversees the local program and advises the board of directors on grant applications. The Crystal Falls Youth Advisory Committee is a group of students that reviews proposals.
“The Youth Advisory Committee is 100 percent youth-led and youth-driven,” according to advisor Debbie Smithson. “This isn’t a school project,” she pointed out. “It’s a community project.”
Funds in the endowment originated from a matching grant from the Kellogg Foundation, according to Community Foundation President Roger Stoor. Monies are available based on stock market investments.
In the past, community foundation monies have contributed to projects at Camp Batawagama, the youth soccer field at Runkle Lake Park, Iron County Little League and the junior football programs. Grants supporting community organizations like the Girl Scouts of America have also received funding. Some endowments are dedicated to specific causes like Harbour House and Contemporary Center.
While not a school program, Smithson hopes participants will still come away from the experience with a lesson learned. “Hopefully, this will help our youth understand philanthropy. They’ll learn about the value of investing and about giving,” Smithson said. “Hopefully, when they go out and become successful, they will understand about putting something back into the community they came from.”
The deadline for grant applications is Feb. 26, 2013. To apply for a community foundation grant, or for more information call 906-774-3131. Application information and forms are also available at www.dickinsonareacommunityfounda
