IRON RIVER—In its only match last week, West Iron’s girls tennis team had to cope with a little rust as it visited Iron Mountain Sept. 11.
IM won the match 7-1, with first singles Kylee Erickson getting the Wykons’ only win, 6-2, 6-2 over Laurie March.

“We had some great points, long rallies and good games,” said Coach Denise Spelgatti. “We just couldn’t put enough things together today.
“I believe part of our problem was not having any matches for 13 days. We were a little rusty.”
WIC’s second doubles duo of Brittanie Barry and Sydnie Mazurek went three sets against Ali Justremski and Eli McCole, exchanging 7-5 sets and then playing a 10-point pro set to decide the match. The IM duo won it 10-6.
The coach said West Iron will spend time at practice improving its strokes and game strategy as the end of the season gets closer.
Coming up: This is the final week of the regular season, when the Wykons see plenty of Kingsford. The Wykons hosted Menominee Sept. 17, visit Kingsford Sept. 18 and then host the Flivvers Sept. 20.
The Great Northern Conference finals are set for Sept. 26, but the site hasn’t been finalized. The Division 2 U.P. Finals are Oct. 3 at Westwood High School.
