Lee Harsh of Arizona, formerly of Crystal Falls, wrote: “On my trips to the U.P., always there is an episode of memorable proportions.  Such was the experience of support bystanders and officers attempting to corral and rescue a loon who thought the Riverside parking lot was a lake. Bless his heart, his plaintive call was more than I could bear, so I called the police in hope they could help. The young lady officer was as concerned as I. She arrived in her car along with a sheriff deputy.

We all tried to figure out a way to help this loon who did not know we were the good guys and obviously was ready to attack anyone close to him. (I never knew they had such formidable beaks!)  Another sheriff’s office deputy arrived and the following picture of him having a conversation with the loon is a classic, although taken from a distance. His statement to the loon was “You and I are going to have an understanding.” After much assistance, trial and error the lost loon was finally lifted to the patrol car and last heard of was being taken to Ice Lake where he will hopefully heal from his experience. My thanks to the officers who took time from their duties to help a loon and show to me what community policing is all about.” (Lee Harsh photo)
