KINGSFORD—While West Iron County’s girls team didn’t earn its third consecutive runner-up trophy at the Division 2 U.P. Track Finals here June 2, the Wykons had a strong finish to their season, earning third place.
St. Ignace easily repeated as team champion with 142 points, and Norway took second with 96. The Wykons claimed third with 72, followed by Rudyard (63) and Ishpeming (50). In all, 11 teams took part.
The Wykon girls won two events—both distance relays. In the 3200 relay, which started the meet, the team of Jaclyn Waara, Madeline Waara, Brianna Lambert and Kylee Erickson won in 10 minutes, 40.86 seconds.
As the meet ended, the 1600 team took first in 4:21.02—that unit included Jaclyn Waara, Joanna Pellizzer, Cassilyn Pellizzer and Erickson.
The best individual finishes were by Jaclyn Waara, who passed two opponents on the last lap to finish second in the 3200 meter run. She also was third in the 800. Joanna Pellizzer was third in the 100 high hurdles, fourth in the 300 lows and fifth in the 200, earning team points in all three events.
Both girls are seniors, and this was their final competition for West Iron.
Erickson (1600 and 800), Cassilyn Pellizzer (400 and high jump), Megan Miatech (shot and discus), Casey Harrington (100), Rebekah Serbinski (400), Emilie Christensen (high jump) and Sydnie Mazurek (long jump) also earned individual points for West Iron.
