Wykon, FP teams reach jr. high finals PDF Print E-mail

IRON RIVER—West Iron’s eighth grade boys team will play in the Division A championship game of the Michigan-Wisconsin junior high tournament, which is scheduled at Norway this Thursday, Jan. 30, at 7 p.m.
(The middle school title games were pushed back from Jan. 27 because of the latest spell of subzero weather.)
West Iron, seeded second in the tourney, reached the finals by defeating third seed Forest Park 35-29 on Jan. 23. The Trojans outscored West Iron 8-3 in the second quarter to take a 12-10 halftime lead, but the Wykons roared back in the second half, outscoring FP 11-6 in the third quarter and 14-11 in the fourth.
Steven Nelson scored eight points for West Iron in the fourth quarter and led his team with 13 points. The Wykons got seven points from Jayce Brockhagen, six from Austin Giuliani, five from Neil Tomasoski and four from Tyler McCarthy.
FP’s Connor Bortolini scored 14 points to lead both teams. The Trojans also got eight from Josh Logan and five from Jonah Logan.    
• Forest Park’s seventh graders reached the finals of the Division B tourney with a thrilling 37-36 win over Florence Jan. 20. The seventh grade B title game will be played at Niagara at 6 p.m. on Jan. 30.
The Bobcats seemed to have the game in hand, leading 17-12 at halftime and 27-20 after three. But in the fourth frame, FP rallied 12-5 and tied the game 32-32 at the end of regulation time. They then outscored Florence 5-4 in overtime.
Max Nylund scored eight points in Forest Park’s fourth quarter rally. Both Nylund and Luke Feldhausen hit baskets in overtime, and Feldhausen gave FP the win when he made the winning free throw with five seconds to play in OT.
Nylund led Forest Park with 26 points, and Feldhausen scored seven.
• West Iron County’s seventh grade team reached the Division A finals by defeating Kingsford Blue on Jan. 21 at West Iron. No other information about the game was available.
The WIC seventh graders will face Iron Mountain in the A Division title game at 6 p.m. on Jan. 30 at Norway.
