WIC track team set for regionals - Wednesday, May 13, 2009

IRON RIVER—West Iron County athletes enjoyed a brisk but sunny afternoon for the West Iron County Invitational tournament, held here May 8.

The boys team won five events and finished second in the triangular with L’Anse and Florence. The Wykon girls won two events and were third.

Tanner Mayo had two of West Iron’s wins in the boys event, taking the 110 high hurdles in 16.36 seconds and the high jump by clearing 5 feet, 8 inches.

The Wykons’ other wins came from David Hebert, Brandon Voss and D.J. Hebert. David Hebert added to his string of wins in the 1600 run, winning in 5:01. Voss earned first in shot put with 39-7, and D.J. Hebert won the long jump in 18-6 ¾.

West Iron was second in eight events, and three athletes had three seconds. D.J. Hebert was second in the 100 (11.77) and 200 (24.31). Chase Brittain finished second in 300 low hurdles (44.58) and long jump (18-6). Johnny Tusa had seconds in shot put (39-4) and discus (92-11).

David Hebert and Florence’s Zac Jones battled down the final stretch in the 3200 run, but Jones nipped him at the finish line. Hebert’s time was 10:52. Joe Rankin was second in pole vault at 8-0.

Mayo was third in the 100, Brittain was fourth in the 300, and Jimmy Spicer was fourth in shot put.

Florence won the meet with 68 points. West Iron had 53, and L’Anse had 36.

The Wykon girls’ firsts came from Lissa Beauchamp in high jump (4-8) and the 400 relay (55.18).

Earning second were Jessie Schmidt in the 100 (13.40), Joanna Pellizzer in the 300 low hurdles (52.21), Hannah Holma in shot (32-10) and the 800 relay (1:57.65).

Thirds went to Kelsie Christensen in the 100 high hurdle and long jumps, Latoya Carter-Bartley in the 100, Schmidt in the 200, Bethany Helgren in shot, Desi Rasmussen in discus, and Taylor Saaranen in pole vault. Vanessa Carter-Bartley was fourth in the 200.

Florence won the girls team title with 84 points, followed by L’Anse (50) and the Wykons (38).

At the Kingsford Invitational on May 5, West Iron’s girls earned wins in four events.

Beauchamp took first in high jump, clearing 4-11, and Schmidt led the field in the 100-meter dash, finishing in 13.62.

Holma won the shot competition, sending the little iron ball 31 feet, 3 ¼ inches, while Rasmussen won discus with a throw of 92-6.

No other results were available.

Kingsford won the meet with 90 points, Stephenson was second at 49, and the Wykons earned 35 points.

The Wykon boys had two wins at the Kingsford tourney.

Brittain won the long jump with a leap of 17-8, and David Hebert took the win in the 1600 run, in 5:09.03.

Those were the only results available. Kingsford dominated the meet, scoring 100 points. Stephenson had 56 points, and the Wykons had 19.

This week the Wykons run in the Kingsford Invitational on May 12, their final warmup before the Division 2 regional tournament, which the Wykons will host at Nelson Field this Thursday, May 14.
