Flivver girls shoot past West Iron - Wednesday, December 30, 2009
IRON RIVER—Quantity of shots meant more than quality Dec. 21, as Kingsford’s girls basketball team defeated West Iron County here Dec. 21.
Though the Wykons shot better from the floor than Kingsford (making 43% of their shots from the floor to the visitors’ 36%), the Flivvers fired 24 more shots than the Wykons (64 to 40) and also connected on 10 three-pointers in getting the win. The Wykons made five triples.
West Iron is now 1-4 overall and stays at 1-2 in the West Pac Conference.
Both offenses came out strong in the first quarter, as the Flivvers built a 21-17 lead. Kingsford’s Jamie Roberts and the Wykons’ Desi Rasmussen both scored eight points in the quarter.
In the second quarter, Kingsford used four triples and outscored West Iron 18-8 for a 39-25 halftime lead. Lauren Brown connected on two threes for Kingsford.
The Wykons shot 53% from the floor in the first half (10 of 19) to Kingsford’s 40% (15 of 38)--but the Flivvers fired twice as many shots as West Iron and led by 14 at halftime.
Roberts and the Wykons’ Jaclyn Waara both scored five points in the third quarter, as Kingsford took a 53-34 lead after three. West Iron outscored Kingsford in the fourth quarter, as Waara scored eight points, including a pair of threes.
The Flivvers paid closer attention to Rasmussen in the second half, holding her to four after the intermission.
Kingsford’s press was a persistent headache for West Iron. The Wykons gave up the ball 26 times overall, to Kingsford’s 17. The Flivvers outscored West Iron off turnovers 25-18.
Waara led the Wykons with 17 points, including three triples. Erickson and Rasmussen both scored 12. Rasmussen also had a team-high six rebounds.
Roberts led Kingsford’s scoring with 20 points. Brown had 12, and Emily Droese scored 10.
The Wykons return from the holidays at Hancock on Jan. 5. They return home Jan. 8 when they host Forest Park.
