Donati medals at GY meet; Wykon boys 2nd, FP 4th - Wednesday, May 14, 2008
CHICAUGON LAKE—With Eric Donati earning medalist honors, West Iron County’s boys golf team tied for second place and Forest Park tied for fourth during the 2008 George Young Invitational, held at the George Young Recreational Complex on May 8.
Technically, West Iron ended up in third place. The Wykons and Flivvers tied for second place in team score with 328, but the Flivvers won the tiebreaker—their fifth golfer was one shot better.
Iron Mountain won the team title with a score of 325. After Kingsford and the Wykons, Forest Park tied with L’Anse and Calumet for fourth place with 335; the tiebreaker put L’Anse fourth, FP in fifth and Calumet sixth.
A total of 21 schools took part.
Donati led all golfers with a round of 38-36—74. Calumet’s Tyler Juntila was one stroke behind, in second place.
Brandon Nocerini made it two Wykons in the top 10 individuals, as he shot 39-41—80, finishing in a three-way tie for ninth place.
Brad Chartier shot an 85 (43-42), Todd Sabotta fired an 89 (42-47) and Beau DuBois ended at 94 (44-50).
The Trojans’ three top golfers all finished with rounds of 82. Erik Peterson and Drew Gussert both shot 40-42, and Tyler Fittante was 42-40.
Travis Fittante shot an 89 (45-44), and Kevin Schiavo followed at 91 (45-46).
• In the George Young girls invitational, West Iron County and Forest Park claimed ninth and 10th places, respectively.
Jaci Salonen led the Wykons by firing 103. April Hibbard shot 122, followed by Sari Franzene (130) and Alyssa Camps (136).
Forest Park’s leader was Kristi West with a 113. Amanda Process shot a 125, followed by Kimberly Beck (126) and Hillary Roose (130).
The Wykons’ team score was 491, and Forest Park shot 494. Ontonagon won the team title with a score of 433, followed by Norway (436) and Iron Mountain (456).
Rachel Suh of Ishpeming was girls medalist with a 18-hole score of 94.
• The Wykon boys stole away team honors from host Negaunee during the Kiwanis Invitational at the Wawonowin course May 6.
West Iron finished with a team score of 327 to Negaunee’s 328. Iron Mountain was third with 336. J.P. Britz of Houghton was medalist with a 74.
Donati was third in the individual standings with a round of 76. He was followed by Nocerini at 81, DuBois at 83 and Chartier with 87.
In the girls meet, West Iron’s Jaci Salonen shot a 93 to tie Manistique’s Sam Creeden for medalist honors.
As a team, the Wykons were eighth with a 481. The Emeralds won with 419, Iron Mountain was second at 446, and Ishpeming was third with 453.
Other West Iron scores were Hibbard at 120, Sarah Fuller at 133 and Camps at 135.
• For West Iron, this is another week of long rides to distant events. They played in Menominee on May 12, travel to Ironwood on May 13 and visit Calumet on May 15. On May 20, the Wykons take on Hancock on the Portage course.
