Voters fill board seats, approve mill renewals - Wednesday, May 14, 2008
IRON COUNTY—County voters elected four school board members and approved a pair of ballot proposals during the county-wide election held May 6.
In West Iron County, two new faces will join the School Board, while two incumbents were returned in Forest Park.
Two West Iron candidates were seeking a full four-year seat on the board, taking the place of Chris Shamion, who decided not to seek a new term. Voters selected Gary Pisoni for the position, giving him 703 votes (65 percent) to James Storti’s 384 (35 percent).
Three people ran for a two-year term on the board, and the voters chose Roy Polich for the job. Polich received 666 votes (61 percent) to 304 (28 percent) for Michael G. Johnson and 124 (11 percent) to Bernie Sacheck.
Polich will complete the term to which Mike Stafford had been elected in 2006. Stafford left the board early this year, and Johnson was named to fill the seat until an election could be held.
At Forest Park, incumbents William St. John and Julia Leake were both re-elected to four-year terms. St. John received 305 votes, and Leake got 302, Robert Marchinowski, who also entered the race, received 192 votes.
Two ballot proposals were approved—one county-wide and one in the city of Caspian.
County voters approved renewal of the 1.5-mill levy for the Medical Care Facility’s maintenance of effort payments. The county-wide total was 1,091 in favor (72 percent) and 434 opposed (28 percent). The levy was approved for five years, 2009 through 2013.
In Caspian, voters approved a one-mill renewal of the Community Center millage for three years, 2008 through 2010. The vote was 100 (60 percent) in favor and 66 (40 percent) opposed.
Voter turnout was 17 percent county-wide. In the West Iron County precincts, voter turnout was 19 percent (including 25 percent in Caspian, which also had the Community Center millage proposal). Turnout was 13 percent in the Forest Park precincts.
