Across the county, young hunters learn safety and skills - Wednesday, May 7, 2008

At the annual Hunter Safety Field Day held at Camp Gibbs, Jim Duda positions Taylor Miilu’s hand so that she can learn to make a good shot with her bow and arrow. Each student is given numerous times to shoot, and is given instruction by skillful, veteran archers as part of their certification class.

Dad, Glen Miatech is one of many parents who bring their children to the event, and often stay to assist. Compass reading is one of many skills taught to the 82 young hunters on May 3 from the West Iron County area.


Larry Pifke, left, shows Nolan Raab how to use a blackpowder rifle, while Sara Baumgartner is taught the same by Bob Pozniak. Each student, equipped with proper eye and hearing safety gear takes a number of turns loading and firing the rifles.


Sara Caron of Forest Park sets her sights on the target while being guided in rifle use by certified instructor Tony Demboski at the shooting range at the Sagola Township Sportsmen’s Clubhouse on Eddy Lake in Channing. The Hunter Safety Field Day was held for Forest Park, North Dickinson and Republic schools’ students on May 3 with 52 students attending the event. Demboski, who volunteers along with 14 others, is also an instructor for an NRA shooting class.


The Sagola Township Sportsmen’s Clubhouse on Eddy Lake in Channing proved an ideal spot on May 3, Hunter Safety Field Day held for Forest Park, North Dickinson and Republic schools’ students. John Crady, event coordinator, show a group the importance of knowing your location when hunting by using maps, such as those available in area Platt Books.


DNR Conservation Officer Dave Painter volunteers his time, and shares his experience in the field of archery, at the Hunter Safety Program in Channing. He demonstrates the uses of long bow, recurve and compound bows.
