Frailing wins twice at IM - Wednesday, May 7, 2008

IRON COUNTY—Derrick Frailing won two events and Jereck Bowman won another for West Iron County’s boys track team during a triangular meet at Iron Mountain on April 29.

The Wykon boys finished in third place as a team.

Frailing sped away from the field to win both individual sprint events. He took first place in the 100 in 11.85 seconds and later added a victory in the 200 with a time of 23.71.

West Iron’s third win was earned by Bowman in the 1600, which he won in 5:08.52.

Mike Hull and Tanner Mayo both earned seconds for the Wykons at Iron Mountain. Hull was on Bowman’s heels throughout the 1600 and was the runner-up in a time of 5:14.54. Mayo got his second place4 in high jump, clearing 5 feet, 6 inches.

The Wykons also took second in the 400 relay, finishing in 48.62.

Earning third were Mayo in the 110 high hurdles (17.13), Bowman in the 800 (2:21.31) and Frailing in long jump (18-2 ¼).

Hull took fourth in the 800, 2:23.10.

Calumet edged Iron Mountain for first place with 72 points to IM’s 71. West Iron was third at 32.

Melissa Beauchamp earned the only event win for the Wykon girls, as she cleared 4-8 in the high jump.

West Iron was runner-up in seven girls events. Missy Christensen was second in three of them: the 100 high hurdles (17.75), 300 low hurdles (52.75) and long jump (15 feet, 7 ½ inches).

Also finishing in second were Jessie Schmidt in the 100 (13.8) and three relays: the 800 (Kristin Ivey, Ashley Schmidt, Adri Ceron and Hannah Holma, 2:01); the 400 (Ivey, both Schmidts and Christensen, 54.30); and the 1600 (Ivey, Ashley Schmidt, Kyle Busakowski and Ceron, 5:15).

West Iron had a pair of thirds: by Jessie Schmidt in the 200 (28.71) and Holma in shot put (27-9 ½). Ceron was fourth in the 400 (1:13).

As a team, the Wykon girls finished with 31 points. Iron Mountain won with 87 points, and Calumet had 49.

West Iron’s boys results from a quadrangular meet at Norway on April 24:

110 high hurdles: 2. Tanner Mayo, 17.41.

100: 3. Derrick Frailing, 11.57; 4. Jon Menghini, 12.26.

1600: 3. Jereck Bowman, 5:06.56.

300 low hurdles: 4. Mayo, 48.23.

200: 2. Frailing, 23.76.

High jump: 1. Mayo, 5-6.

Long jump: 3. Frailing, 17-?.

Team scores: Ishpeming, 94.5; Iron Mountain, 74; Norway, 59.5; West Iron County, 28.

The Wykons were scheduled to take part in the Stephenson Invitational on May 2. They made the long bus ride down there, only to see the event rained out after one event.

This week, the Wykons take part in a meet at Kingsford on May 6 and then host their only home meet of the season May 9 at Nelson Field.

The Nelson Field track also hosts the West Pac Conference JV meet on May 12. The varsity squad competes at the Kingsford Invitational on May 13.
