Samaritan Services looking for help - Wednesday, April 9, 2008
Iron County Samaritan Services (ICSS) is a completely volunteer-run nonprofit organization. It is actively recruiting people to work with the homeless in the Iron County area. Its goal is to provide emergency, temporary housing for homeless people in our local community. During the month of March, ICSS helped to house or otherwise aid six individuals, and is in the process of serving 15 people currently. Surprisingly, a large portion of those being served are teenagers still attending high school, and this group keeps growing. Because of the great increase in requests for help, more people are needed to help fill this urgent need.
Additionally, ICCS is in need of household items, as a residence has been made available for housing temporarily those with no place else to go. Cleaning supplies, dishes, pots and pans, utensils, silverware, spices, linens, brooms, vacuum cleaner, bedding and appliances are just samples of what is required. If you have something you would like to donate, or would like an updated list of what is needed, please call ICSS’ office at 265-2000.
ICSS is an ecumenical, Christian-based organization whose mission is to serve those not being otherwise served by other agencies; these agencies are limited in what they can do for people who are in a one-time emergency situation. Its goal is to demonstrate how our community is willing to support those who find themselves in crisis. In order to carry on this mission, ICSS needs more people dedicated to helping those less fortunate than they are. Please call 265-2000 if you are interested in contributing your time, efforts or any household items. Financial donations are always needed and may be mailed to Iron County Samaritan Services, 112 Cayuga St., Iron River, MI 49935 or may be deposited at any CoVantage Credit Union location.
