Project Linus’ pockets of love - Wednesday, April 2, 2008

IRON RIVER—One of Project Linus’ many volunteers made these special blankets with a unique corner pocket covered with a small heart.

“This is just one of the many blankets that come to Project Linus,” said Robin Mehrens, Project Linus coordinator. “Each one made with love for a child they will never meet but know they have a special need that comes in the form of a blanket.”

Project Linus is a 100 percent volunteer non-profit organization whose mission is to provide security through new, handmade blankets for children in crisis.

“Our blankets come from many volunteers consisting of quilters clubs, Girls Scouts, 4-H, children from pre-school to the Key Club of West Iron County High School. We also have many individuals who design beautiful blankets from their home.”

Since the inception of 2003, the local chapter, “Hand To Heart,” have given out over 516 blankets both locally and national. This past year, 75 blankets were delivered among Iron County Community Hospital, Iron River Fire/Police Department, Dickinson-Iron District Health Department and the Human Services Department.

“We also had the privilege of delivering blankets to the schools of Crandon, Wis. after their town tragedy,” said Mehrens.

“As Project Linus’ coordinator, I applied for a community grant through Wal-Mart and was presented with a check for $500, which will be used for fabric and supplies.

These days, ‘thank you’ just seems so small, but I am writing to say those small words from the depths of my heart. Thank you to all involved with Project Linus. You are ‘touching’ lives.

“Project Linus is a continuous project and a rewarding journey.”
